Nail Extensions and Overlays

Beauty doesn't need to be about just your hair and face, it is also about your nails.

There are many people who aren't able to grow their nails to a length they are satisfied with. This can be due to various reasons, including brittle nails, working conditions, lifestyles, or an inability to overcome their habit of biting their nails. Whatever the reason, long nails can remain an envy for many.

Nail extensions are artificial nails that are fixed on top of the natural nail and blended in to create a natural look. And as and when the base nail grows out, the gap is filled with the artificial nail material. As the nail extension grows out your own nail will become longer and be able to be overlayed with a range of strengthening products. There is a whole range of artificial nail treatments available. Nail extensions can also be for a ‘special event’ and removed safely following your big day.

The process of applying nail extensions
Tips are pre-formed shapes, which are chosen to match your nail shape as closely as possible and then filed to ensure a perfect match is created. These are then attached by glue to your existing nail. These are the most durable type of extension. First, your natural nail has to be slightly buffed to give the adhesive a better grip. Then, the nail is glued to your nail bed and filed to create a smooth natural looking join, as this is done by hand and not by electric drills the filing process will not damage your natural nail.

The difference between Acrylic, Gel, Fibreglass & Silk

Acrylic
Acrylic is a very popular system and used widely by Nail Technicians.  Acrylic is the strongest of all systems and is recommended for clients who use their hands for manual work or who struggle to maintain their nails.  Acrylic can be applied over a natural nail or over an extension, providing strength.

Acrylic can however discolour over time, or if you use chemicals, for example everyday cleaning agents, without gloves.  This can be cured by a UV Topcoat or a clear topcoat of polish being applied.
Acrylic does have an odour whilst being applied but this is odourless when dry.
Acrylic may also be used as sculpture using nail forms, these are very popular for nail repairs or if you have natural nails of an adequate length and do not wish to have tips applied.  These provide you with a natural lightweight extension free from glue, nail tips and no filing is required for blending the tip.
Prices can be provided upon request for a full set of sculptured nails.

UV Gel
UV Gel is a very popular system and used widely by Nail Technicians.  UV Gel can be applied over a natural nail or over an extension, providing strength.  Unlike Acrylic, Fibreglass or Silk, UV Gel is non porous which means it will not discolour if it comes into contact with chemicals, such as everyday cleaning agents.   UV Gel unlike Acrylic is also odourless and gives more flexibility than Acrylic. UV Gel is also ‘lightweight’ so feels more natural over your nails, however having said this with any nail strengthening system you will not feel ‘weighted down’ by your fingers!!

Fibreglass/ Silk
Fibreglass and Silk are used to strengthen the natural nail, repair split or broken nails or applied over tips as an overlay.  Great for wedding nails as they look so natural.

Fibreglass is a synthetic man made material with much larger weaves than Silk.  Fibreglass is much stronger than Silk and for this reason is is normally preferred to be used over a tip rather than Silk. Fibreglass will give a natural looking finish but will not be as transparent as Silk.  Fibreglass is not as strong or durable as Acrylic and UV Gel and will require maintenance at least every 2 weeks.

Acrylic Application
Acrylic is a liquid monomer and powder Polymer system.  In basic terms the two are mixed together to form ‘acrylic’.  Heat is then required for the process to complete, this simply means me ensuring the room temperature is adequate to ensure the acrylic sets correctly.  The Acrylic is then used to cover the entire nail, including any tips which may have been applied, giving a strong natural looking nail which you can have finished in many different effects including High Gloss, Natural, French or American Manicure, Coloured Tips, Coloured Acrylic for the paint free finish, Nail Art Effects, painted or simply plain, the decision is yours and we will discuss this during your consultation to ensure you get the results you require.
Acrylic requires infills every 3-6 weeks depending on the speed your nails grow.

To remove the acrylic and any extensions your nails will be soaked in acetone and followed by a manicure. This takes about 45 minutes to an hour.
Application time is approximately 1.5 to 2 hours due to the buffing process which is done by hand, I do not use electric drills.

Gel Application
UV Gel is a system which creates a non porous gloss finish, this is achieved by the ‘gel’ being cured under a UV Lamp. The UV Gel is used to cover the entire nail, including any tips which may have been applied, giving a strong natural looking nail which you can have finished in many different effects including, High Gloss, Natural, French or American Manicure, Coloured Tips, Coloured Gels for the paint free finish, Nail Art Effects, painted or simply plain, the decision is yours and we will discuss this during your consultation to ensure you get the results you require.
UV Gel requires infills every 3-6 weeks depending on the speed your nails grow.

UV Gel is removed by filing, I always do this by hand to ensure no damage to your nails.  This takes about 45 minutes to an hour.

Fibreglass/ Silk Application
Fibreglass and Silk are applied by the same method.  Your nails are gently buffed to remove any excess grease and a fine layer is applied over your nail or extension, this is then followed by a layer of resin which is then sprayed with a setting agent, this process is then completed again. The nails are then buffed leaving a high gloss natural finish.

Silk and Fibreglass nails can also be finished in a range of different styles including French or American manicure, nail art effects or painted.

Sculptured Nails
Sculptured nails are foils which are used in conjunction with either Acrylic or a UV Gel. This system means you can either have extensions or nail repairs without tips being glued to your nail. Sculptured nails are also more flexible than other artificial nails and there’s no need to routinely remove them - you can keep filling them in at the root for as long as your nails stay healthy.

Infills/ Rebalancing
Your natural nails will continue to grow and a gap will appear at the bottom of the overlay. This gap will need to be infilled to ensure the nail is kept in balance and to prevent the overlay from lifting.
Application time is approximately 1 hour

Nail Art
Your nails can be decorated with gems, coloured gels and acrylic, glitter, transfers, air brush stencils or free hand painting to create stunning individual nail art.

A range of designs are available or if you have an idea in mind then please contact me so we can achieve the result you require.

Aftercare
•    Always wear protective gloves when cleaning, gardening or decorating
•    Apply cuticle oil daily
•    Apply hand cream daily
•    Avoid filing and picking at your nails
•    Do not use your nails as tools
•    Return for regular infills/ rebalancing
•    Return for removals if required or if any problems occur

The biggest problem with nail overlays or extensions is ‘picking or filing’ your nails, this is when damage is normally caused to the nail bed.  Please if you have any queries or questions following a treatment from me do not hesitate to ring or email me.
